— Red Elephants, Mzima Springs & Kilimanjaro at Africa's Largest Park Complex
Tsavo East and Tsavo West together form one of Africa's largest national park complexes — nearly 22,000 square kilometres of wilderness. Their combined landscapes represent some of Kenya's most ancient and elemental terrain: scorched lava plains, crystal-fed springs, volcanic hill ranges, and the rust-red earth that gives Tsavo's famous elephant herds their extraordinary terracotta colouring. Tsavo West is the more dramatic park — a topographically varied landscape of lava beds, rocky kopjes, and the remarkable Mzima Springs, where crystal-clear water bursts up from beneath ancient lava flows at a rate of 50 million litres per day. The underground viewing chamber at Mzima — from which you look up at hippos gliding silently through the water above you — is one of Africa's most otherworldly wildlife encounters. The circuit concludes in Amboseli, where the presence of Kilimanjaro transforms an already magnificent elephant wilderness into something approaching the transcendent. This 5-day route is one of Kenya's most underrated and authentic safari circuits.
Depart Nairobi on the Mombasa Road, entering Tsavo West through the Mtito Andei Gate after approximately 4 hours. Afternoon game drive through the park's volcanic kopje terrain, targeting resident lion prides and large elephant herds.
Full day exploring Tsavo West's extraordinary geological features. Morning walk at Mzima Springs — observe hippos from the underwater viewing chamber. Walk along the dramatic Shetani Lava Flow. Afternoon game drive through the Ngulia Hills area.
Cross into Tsavo East. The landscape transitions abruptly from Tsavo West's green hills to the flat, ochre-red open plains of East. Drive along the Galana River watching enormous crocodiles bask on the banks and vast elephant herds drink at midday. Spot the Yatta Plateau — the world's longest lava flow at 290 kilometres.
Drive through the Chyulu Hills corridor to Amboseli National Park. Enter the park for an afternoon swamp-land drive. The evening golden light on Kilimanjaro is frequently the most beautiful moment of the entire circuit.
Pre-dawn departure at 05:30 AM to position at Observation Hill for the clearest Kilimanjaro view and most iconic elephant-with-mountain photography. Full morning game drive. Return to Nairobi via Namanga, arriving 3:00–4:00 PM.
